You were always too much for him. He had to go find less....

Chapter 18

Imani

The moment I landed in Atlanta, I wanted to buy a plane ticket back home. I almost did, but I forced myself to be strong, which was easier said than done. The last time I’d stepped foot in that city was for Dez’s funeral. The grief set in when I received a message from Dez’s phone number. I’d just made it to my rental car and was about to hit the road when it came through in our group chat. Her words floated around in my mind as I read them in her voice. It was almost like she was sitting right next to me. She wanted us to meet at her mother’s house later in the day.

Hurrying to tuck my phone away in my purse, I fell back into my seat. My eyes clenched shut as I tried to ward off my tears, but it was to no avail. They fell freely down my cheeks, and my bottom lip trembled. As much as I’d cried, I was surprised there was any water left in my eyes.

“Dez, you really fucked me up with this one,” I said inside the Chevrolet Tahoe. “It’s been so hard without you. But I’m going to get through this weekend for you.”

I wiped my face, started the SUV, and drove out of the parking garage. As I cruised through the city, a nostalgic feeling came over me. I was home. Growing up in Atlanta made me the person I was today. Being surrounded by nothing but dreamers and doers, I had no choice but to constantly look to the sky. Making something of myself was inevitable.

Back in college, one of my favorite places to go was a family-owned coffee shop called the Wake Up Café in Buckhead. To me it was more than a place to get the best mochas. It was where I went to unwind and get myself together when I was stressing. It was my place of peace, which was why I always made time to go whenever I was back home. Logan and I had made plans with Roze to stay with her while we were in town, and I figured I had a little time to kill before Logan’s plane landed.

The drive to the café was only about twenty-five minutes, and surprisingly traffic wasn’t too bad that morning. When I arrived, I barely recognized the place on the outside or inside. The name was still the same, but the last time I’d come it was just a simple coffee shop with a counter to place your order and chairs to sit. Now everything had been upgraded to keep up with the times. The wooden tables had been replaced with glass, the simple light fixtures were now baby chandeliers, and there were even complimentary laptops against one of the walls for guests to use.

“What the . . . hell? This place has changed,” I said to myself, looking around.
